The West Michigan Enforcement Team (WMET) has seen at least 4 overdoses from heroin or heroin like substances in the past year, significantly more than the last several years combined. While the percentage of youth who report using heroin is historically low, a new trend in youth substance abuse among teenagers is leading to increased heroin use in young adults. Youth misuse of prescription drugs at the middle school and high school level has been steadily increasing over the past several years and Ottawa County Youth are reporting they don’t see harm in using prescription medication without a doctor’s permission or prescription. Early misuse of prescription medication can lead to the eventual use of illicit drugs. Join us for a community presentation on the link between prescription drugs and heroin and to find out ways to prevent early misuse of prescription medication.
